Mammoth M/C Meeting Minutes

James Connolly:
James agreed with John about rotating the presidency position, and was happy to accept his nomination for president of the Mammoth Motorcycle Club for the 2011 season. James promised to make it an interesting one, with lots of riding and plenty of drinking and socializing.
James also provided a short NORRA 1000 update: Preparations for the upcoming Mexican 1000 are coming along nicely, and the bike is well on its way to becoming “race ready.”

Like most of us, Joe is now in “snow mode,” and spends most of his free time on the slopes. However, Joe did give us a quick update on some of his recent meetings regarding the Reata track down in Bishop. Apparently Randy from G.S.C has run into several hurdles with the current location of the future MX track, and is now working on a backup plan. Joe also informed us that Jerry Counts is planning to have several dual sport and trail riding events this season in the Mammoth/Bishop area. This is exciting news, and we’ll keep you posted on when and where these events take place.
On a side note, G.S.E was just approved to build an R/C car track in their front parking lot (next to Main street.) The track will be open to everyone. They’ll have cars and parts available as well as Demo's from Traxxas. Should be up and running within the next two weeks.

Sam was up from the Valencia area on a ski vacation and decided to drop in and introduce himself.

This was our first official meeting of 2011! We met at the Smokehouse restaurant at approximately 5:00 with a mere 5 members in attendance (one guest). Lucky for us, the smokehouse has $2 beers and ½ off appetizers for happy hour – our cups were never empty.
John Connolly:
John gave a CTUC map update. The New Eastern Sierra area CTUC map is in its final stages and should be in production very soon. Mammoth M/C was responsible for some of the loop ideas, colorful ride descriptions, and photos that’ll be found within this map.
The final product should provide a good base of information for visitors interested in taking on some of what our area provides. John also mentioned that this map might be “free” of charge to everyone (but don’t hold him to it). In the end, it should look very similar to the Friends of Jawbone map.
John also brought up the idea of rotating presidential duties each year for the club, and he nominated James Connolly for President in 2011 (Joe will move to sergeant of arms, and John will stay at treasurer). Everyone agreed that the presidential position shouldn’t be grandfathered in for any one person, but instead it should be rotated between interested club members.
On a side note, John's new/old plated xr440 has been seen eating up sandy singletrack in the Owens Valley in the past weeks - a great route is being pioneered for the test and tune activities now being planned for the 1984 cr500 (NORRA 1000). We shall keep you posted on upcoming rides in the Owens Valley.
John also noted that the web site donate button isn't working properly in windows Internet Explorer - Expect a fix shortly.

Website report:
Since November, the website has only received 567 hits, and 1,317 page views. As you can see, website traffic has fallen off quite a bit, but we’re still pulling in some respectable numbers considering that it’s winter. Our most popular page the last 2 months has been the GPS downloads page, followed by our “News” section. I guess people are getting their tracks downloaded in time for spring. Ha!
As usual, Google is still bringing in the most traffic, with “advrider.com” a close second. If you have some time, check out the “sponsors” section. I’ve added a couple member businesses. “EZ-Rak,” and “Mammoth Snowmobile Repair” are both linked up with our site now. Both are owned and operated by Mammoth locals / Club members.
Don’t forget, we’ve got a new Classifieds page on the website, so if you have some old junk laying around that you want to get rid of, just give me a holler and I’ll post it up.

Forest Service to Convene Planning Meetings for Shady Rest Recreation
Mammoth Lakes, CA – The US Forest Service received an OHV grant from the State of California to support recreation planning efforts for the “Shady Rest” area within the Town of Mammoth Lakes. The planning process is designed to address year round motorized use while considering the needs of non-motorized users in the immediate and surrounding area and the potential impact of proposed geothermal development. The desired outcome of the planning process is to design, review, and approve the development of a new motorized staging area. The planning process will begin with a series of public meetings to discuss current and future recreation uses and review site development options. Information from the public meetings will be used to help develop a proposed action released to the public and subject to the National Environmental Policy Act and the California Environmental Quality Act.
A series of three public meetings will be held to discuss the future recreation management of the Shady Rest area:
Thursday, February 10 - Existing Condition, Current Uses and Needs Assessment
Thursday, February 17 – Multiple Uses, Recreation Development Options
Thursday, March 3 – Presentation and Review of Recreation Alternatives
All meetings will be held at the auditorium of the Mammoth Lakes Ranger Station and begin at 5:30pm, with an expected 1.5 hour meeting time.
