Sacajawea, also spelled Sacagawea, was born in 1788. She was a Shoshone Native American who guided and translated for the explorers Lewis and Clark. She traveled with them all the way from North Dakota to Oregon and back, looking for a route to the Pacific Ocean.
Sacagawea met Lewis and Clark in North Dakota. She was hired to help guide the expedition, and she carried her baby along on the journey. The two explorers wrote about how many important things Sacagawea did for them on the trip. She translated the Shoshone language, found plants to eat in the wilderness, and worked hard to help them in many other ways.
