Henry Hudson was born in 1565. He was an English explorer and navigator who explored parts of the Arctic Ocean and northeastern North America. The Hudson River, Hudson Strait, and Hudson Bay are named for Hudson.
Hudson was hired in 1607 to find a water route from Europe to Asia. He made two trips, but never found a route to China. In 1607, he sailed to the Arctic Ocean and discovered an island. In 1608, he sailed to an island north of Russia in the Arctic Ocean.
Next, Hudson was hired by a Dutch company to find another route. On this trip. He sailed to Nova Scotia (east Canada) and then south. He found the river we now call the Hudson River. He also found the area that is now called New York City. He reported back to the company, and many Dutch settlers came to the area.
Henry Hudson died in 1611 when his crew left him in the Hudson Bay.
