Jacques-Yves Cousteau was born in 1910. He was a French underwater explorer, environmentalist, and inventor. Cousteau invented diving and many devices for scuba diving. In 1943, Cousteau and a French engineer named Emile Gagnan invented the aqualung. The aqualung is a breathing machine that gave oxygen to divers and let them to stay underwater for several hours.
Cousteau explored the world's oceans in his research ship "Calypso." He had a popular TV show and many films and books that gave people a lot of information about the amazing things in the sea.
