Isabella Bird was born in England in 1831. When she was young, she had a lot of health problems. A doctor told her father that her health would improve if she traveled. So, in 1854, Isabella traveled to the United States. She loved the trip and wrote a book about her adventures.
After her father died, Isabella made more trips in Scotland and wrote many magazine articles about what she found. Next, she traveled to Australia and Hawaii. In Hawaii, she climbed a volcano and wrote about this adventure in her next book.
In 1873, she went back to the mainland of the United States and traveled to Colorado to explore the Rocky Mountains. There, she climbed a mountain called Long’s Peak.
Isabella’s books were very popular. She also traveled to Japan, Indonesia, and the Middle East and wrote about those adventures too. She became known as a great explorer and was the first woman to be able to join the Royal Geographical Society
