Paradox in Natural Language
Abstract: We discuss three ways in which paradox is threatened within contemporary semantic theory, focusing mainly on paradoxes resulting from the postulation of "set-like" entities: groups and nonimalized properties. After showing how contradiction arises in both domains, we sketch five general strategies for avoiding paradox, along with some of their overall advantages and disadvantages. Ultimately, the purpose of the paper is to outline a general program of future research concerning paradox in natural language.
