Started in September 1963, wearing shorts. Not for long though, as the other kids took the mick, so my mum quickly bought me some long trousers! I also did not know how to tie my silver and navy school tie, and Mr Rowley had to do it for me after PE. I soon learned how to do this, also to save embarrassment.
I was picked on by some bigger boys in the first week - a gang of four, I think, but they soon stopped when they realised I had a big brother in whatever year 10 was then known as - he was 3 years older and bigger than me then. My Hero! He's still 3 years older than me, but seems to have shrunk.
A big thanks to all these friends who shared the Sixties with me in Llanrwst, every one of them was important in making the Conwy Valley our own little bit of magic, and they ensured that the sun was always shining, even when the snow was over our wellies. We had great fun arguing about The Beatles and The Stones, Greaves and Best, reading the NME, watching England win the World Cup in black and white on our 18inch tvs, and men on the moon! Most of these friends ended up in the back row of the Luxor Cinema on far too many Saturday nights to remember. I think the seats cost three shillings and thruppence. I remember Colin reading an article about a machine that actually recorded tv programmes so that you could watch them again - I said it would never happen.
Big thanks, also, to our dads for ferrying us around, not to mention the Crosville buses and our trusty thumbs which got us lifts everywhere.
So thank you to Gareth Powell, Joan Hughes, Alan Hicks, Elizabeth Grodzicki, Stuart Thompson, Janine Thompson, Caroline Dickinson, Elfyn Hughes (now Llwyd), Geraint Roberts, Selwyn Jones, Nerys Hughes, Eleri Hughes, Gareth Lloyd Jones, Gerallt Hughes, Dave Moore, John Glyn Davies, Kufu (Keith), Gwyn Edwards, Elwyn Edwards, Jennifer Thomas, Sian Morgan Jones, Ceinwen Morgan Jones, Susan Pickup, Jackie Waite, Christine Phillips, Eleanor Stone, Dwynwen Berry, Merfyn Roberts,Colin Pierce, Danny Roberts, David Llewellyn, Eddie Griffiths, Nerys Jones, Sian Williams, Eunice Roberts, Evelyn Piper, Kathy Jones, Heather Jones, Val Jones, Eleri Griffiths, Mai Griffiths, Alwena Williams, Wendy Spencer, Marilyn Jervis, Sylvia Stanfield, Steve Garnett, George Parry, Ann Corrie, Helen Corrie, Faye Carroll, Derek Brown and Rhianwen Roberts, and everyone whose names escape me at present. Those who were there will have worked out why the names are in this order.
I recently said to my beautiful, wonderful, gorgeous wife, Les, who may well read this, that it would be great to find out what some of my old girlfriends were doing now, and that I should try to visit them, and she said "They'll all be grannies now." Never thought of that! Bet they're still good looking though. Jealous cat!
Many thanks to Steve Garnett, who has helped me out with some of the names, all the way from New Zealand. I wonder if he STILL looks like a choirboy??
I've also found Gareth Lloyd Jones - he moved from Sydney to Auckland in 2019.
