Supervision
I am interested in supervising PhD students whose research focus is on vocabulary acquisition and lexical issues, in particular
vocabulary acquisition from reading
vocabulary acquisition from listening or viewing
learning collocations/formulaic sequences
vocabulary acquisition from out-of-school exposure/extramural English
vocabulary processing
vocabulary testing.
I have (co-)supervised six PhD projects.
Duy, V.V., Peters, E. (sup.), Noreillie, A-S. (cosup.) (2022). Incidental collocation learning from different modes of input and factors that affect learning.
Puimège, E., Peters, E. (sup.), Montero Perez, M. (cosup.) (2022). An empirical investigation into the acquisition and processing of L2 formulaic sequences in meaningful input.
Duong, P.T., Peters, E. (sup.), Desmet, P. (cosup.), Montero Perez, M. (cosup.) (2021). When input meets output? Empirical investigations into the impact of input and output tasks on L2 vocabulary acquisition and use.
Noreillie, A-S., Peters, E. (sup.), Desmet, P. (cosup.) (2019). It's all about words. Three empirical studies into the role of lexical knowledge and use in French listening and speaking tasks.

Students who are interested in doing their PhD study under my supervision should send me a research proposal containing the research aim, rationale, clear research questions and research design. The proposal should be in English. It is strongly recommend to have a background in applied linguistics or vocabulary studies and to be familiar with the basics of statistics. The language(s) studied are preferably Dutch, English, German, or French. Other languages (Italian, Spanish, Arabic) are also possible. Purely questionnaire-based and interview-based studies, however, will not be considered.
