The unfortunate reality is that funding can make or break a graduate degree! There's no shame in talking about money.
On this page you'll find information relating to funding at UBC and in Canada more broadly. This is not an exhaustive list - we strongly encourage you to seek out opportunities related to your field and discuss with your supervisor (chances are they've done this before).
All thesis-based graduate students are offered stipends based on their level of study:
*Please note, the 2% increase will come into affect September 2022, values listed below are for the 2021-2022 academic year.*
Master’s: minimum $25,500 CDN/annually guaranteed for the first two years.
PhD: minimum $25,500. CDN/annually & tuition fee coverage guaranteed for four years.
Minimum stipends increase annually by 2% in line with increases of tuition fees and average inflation rates.
Stipends are generally provided through a combination of your supervisor's research funding and teaching assistantships (TA). Stipend levels provided are subject to change depending on any external scholarship(s) held. *Be aware: this means that students who receive other funding sources (e.g., NSERC) are NOT guaranteed to earn their original stipend on top of their scholarship. Talk to your supervisor about specific funding situations to determine annual totals if external funding is involved. This also applies to TA hours - taking on more TA hours does NOT guarantee more income for the student.*
Non-thesis students are not eligible for stipends or competitive awards.
