it has become somewhat of a tradition to have slightly random people at my seder. apparently it is a special mitzvah to actually have someone actually come in when you open the door and call out to the street to see if anyone wants to join your seder...
anyhow, last year i invited a previously unknown person who i found on craigslist and i think it worked out quite well for everyone, and i’d like to repeat the experiment....
soooo.... i’m calling out to craigslist to see if there is someone who would like to join us.
here are some details about us:
we’ll hold (or ‘throw’?) a seder on the second night of passover—tuesday, april 3 beginning around 6:45pm. there will be somewhere between 15 and 25 people some of whom are good friends of ours (me and my husband), others of whom are good friends of good friends, but many of whom don’t really know each other... many of us are musicians, academics, artists or filmmakers of some description, and most of us are in our 30s though perhaps a few are still in their 20s and a few are edging into their 40s, and there may even be one or two who have made it to their 50s or 60s... plus maybe one or two or three craigslisters looking for a seder.
our seder is not really identifiable as anti- or pro-zionist or humanist or reformist or hippy-ist or heterosexist or non-sexist or marxist or feminist or masculinist or ashkenazist or sephardist (though we do follow the sephardic ‘rules’ for kosher-for-passover—i.e. rice and chickpeas are fully embraced since we are vaguely vegetarian). all the elements are certainly performed and there are also “extra” elements some of which are slightly silly. there is plenty of red wine, mostly vegetarian food (plus gefilte fish), traditional herbs and additional extra-traditional herbs. we use a haggadah that i have cobbled together and annotated year after year for about the last 8 years. this whole thing started as a sort of performance-arty sort of event but now it’s a bit more mellow and dare i say it, even slightly serious at times... also, not everyone at the seder is jewish (such as my husband and our dog as well as many of our friends), for whatever that’s worth. in other words, if you know nothing (or close to nothing) about passover, you won’t be alone.
anyhow... we have room for a few more people, so if you’re interested, please drop me a line and tell me something about yourself and why/how you find yourself searching for a seder.... and we can talk... all i’d ask is that you come with an open mind and a couple bottles of drinkable red wine. if you want to bring some other passover-treats, of course they are always welcome.
and regardless... have a happy passover! (or as my uncle would say, have a kosher pesach!)
