POSSE: Pissed-Off Students for Silence while Eating
We, the POSSE, are writing because of the ongoing "art-work," Drive By Muzak by UCSD graduate student, Eliza Slavet, playing in the Price Center's food court, 24 hours a day, October 15-November 15. Many of you have probably noticed the sounds of traffic playing through the ceiling speakers in the Price Center's food court over the last three weeks: cars and trucks zooming by, loud honks and stereos blasting, motorcycles and engines... polluting our Price Center. We are pissed off. We want silence while eating. We want it now. We do not like the sounds of traffic piped into the Price Center. We liked the commercial radio station accompanying and encouraging our snacking.
We therefore propose the following:
1) Play the radio so that we can hear it. We recommend 93.3 FM because it has music from the 80's, 90's and 70's, as well as commercials designed for people like us-- upwardly mobile college students. We find the traffic sounds detrimental to our digestion. Playing 93.3 FM encourages digestion of the foods which are sold in the Price Center. Sometimes we even hear advertisements between the music for the restaurants which we are lucky enough to have right on campus: Wendy's, Subway, and Taco Bell. It's true we don't have Taco Bell (yet), but we do have Tia Molly's, which is almost as good, though doesn't have the brand name comfort of Taco Bell.
2) All students should be silent while eating in the Price Center. If Slavet's work has done one thing, it has made us realize that we need to listen to our surroundings, not bombard them with more needless noise. Slavet's piece is disturbing because it pipes in the noise we want to get away from. Thus, we do not take public transportation. We buy and enjoy our cars with air conditioning and loud stereos so that we can travel through the city listening to our OWN sounds-- NOT traffic or anybody else's sounds. We therefore propose that all students remain silent in the Price Center: We, students, should learn to listen to OUR sounds: the sweet sounds of music and advertisements aimed at US.
We are Pissed Off Students for Silence while Eating.
