Overview (See attached for detailed reading):
Typically one person moves and one person observes. The goal of each is to move/observe without judgment - and then to compare notes on the experience after the session. What does your body feel like doing? What was the experience of observing like? These are actually some interesting questions to get to the bottom of - because your thinking mind wants to stay front and center. Many people find that "being observed" changes the way they move. Being present for the process can be eye-opening. See attached for more in depth discussion of this process.
Variations used in our group:
- Typical: Performed mostly with eyes closed, largely as an individual exercise. Usually non-verbal, but making sounds is common. People are asked to take care to minimize accidents (be careful with quick movements, rolling around, walking). One mover paired with one observer who compare experiences after the movement.
- Limited Observers: People are allowed to switch between Observing and Moving at will (as long as some minimum number of observers is met). Observers and Movers are not "Connected" and do not compare experiences at the end.
- Cleansing Movement: sometimes used at the beginning. No observers. Allow everyone to move at the same time. Intended to allow everyone to "Arrive" and get more connected somatically before we begin.
- In confined space: to explore what happens when we interact.
