Spring Planting & Seeding

NATURE RESERVE POLLINATION MEADOW

After many months of planning, the EHT Nature Reserve Committee has commenced a project to promote the sustainability of the environment and increase various habitats in the park in a natural way.

This is a long-term project to develop habitats that will attract pollinators, such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.  Thus far four planter boxes were built earlier this year and planted with native species that should start blooming in the next couple of months.

In the meadow area, “pesticide markers” have recently been placed to identify an area treated by the US Fish & Wildlife Division of the US Department of Interior to eradicate the invasive mug wort and other non-native plants.  We have made significant progress in doing so, and this final application is the latest step before we plant and seed additional native pollinator attractive plants later this month. Further, a well and irrigation system is being installed to ensure that the pollinator gardens in both areas have the support they need to thrive.  Later this year and into 2025, our plans are to expand the pollinator meadow with pathways throughout the Arboretum meadow to provide access for people to enjoy the flowers, butterflies and bees.

Our plan for this spring's planting and seeding is to take place on Saturday, April 20th.  We would like to invite all friends of the Reserve to join us at 9:00 AM in the Arboretum parking lot and participate in this project.  Please bring your own hand trowel and garden gloves. Hope to see you there to participate in this wonderful community event to improve the Reserve.
