Sacred Things

The sacred tramp of soldier’s boots

Marching to defend

The freedoms and the precious truths

That will never have an end.

For principles none can alter,

That neither time nor space can rend,

They put their lives upon the altar.

Hope, mercy, justice,

For them they will not falter.

For love, loyalty, goodness,

Respect, fairness, faith

Friends, charitable redress,

They raise a freedom lay.

They look forth to celestial dawn,

For defiant courage they pray.

And though friends look on

Though a helpless tear do cry,

They possess this greatest love:

For sacred things to die.
