Harmony in the Dragon Year: 2024 Lunar New Year Cultural Celebrations

Led by the Arts and Culture Center of the Enhance Asian Community on Health (EACH), we are delighted to usher in the 2024 Lunar New Year with a series of Traditional Arts and Culture shows. Supported by the Mass Cultural Council Festivals & Projects grant, we aim to enhance activities that significantly contribute to the cultural vitality of our community. From January to February 2024, in collaboration with local organizations like 1000 Southern Artery Quincy, Arlington COA, Town of Arlington, Lexington COA, and Newton Housing Authority, EACH has successfully brought the essence of Asian culture to over 675 individuals across various community site locations.

Our goal extends beyond mere celebration; it embodies a commitment to promoting, preserving, and sharing Asian cultural history, thereby enriching our community's cultural fabric. These in-person cultural activities offered a unique opportunity for community members to engage with Asian culture personally, providing an experience otherwise inaccessible to many. Join us on this artistic journey as we continue to promote and engage in events that enhance our community's cultural life.

Ms. Sara Tan and Hanna Chan  Become DPP Master Trainers, Bridging Health Barriers

We are thrilled to announce a pivotal milestone in our commitment to enhancing health and wellness within our community, focusing on mitigating the language and cultural barriers to addressing chronic diseases, particularly within our Asian-speaking population. Ms. Hanna Chan and Sara Tan recently earned accreditation as Master Trainers for the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP), significantly enhancing our capacity to combat chronic diseases. This designation is a testament to their unwavering dedication and expertise in the field of diabetes prevention, but it also paves the way for us to begin training more Asian-speaking DPP coaches.

By empowering Asian-speaking coaches, we are bridging a critical gap in health education and access, ensuring that wellness knowledge is more inclusive and accessible. Ms. Chan and Ms. Tan's leadership in training DPP coaches will enable us to extend our reach, providing tailored support and fostering healthy lifestyle changes among Asian communities at risk of developing diabetes.

By actively incorporating the valuable insights gleaned from these collaborative efforts, we are confident that our health programs will be even more effectively tailored to address the specific health needs of the Vietnamese community in Worcester and the Chinese community in Quincy.

Enhanced PreventT2 Workshops: A Collaborative Effort with Our Communities

We recently conducted two valuable focus groups in our ongoing quest to deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate health programs. On November 1st, 2023, a dedicated group of Vietnamese participants in Worcester, Massachusetts, provided insightful feedback on our year-long 2022-2023 workshop. Subsequently, on December 12th, 2023, we convened a focus group of Chinese participants in Quincy to assess the first half of their 12-month T2 workshop. These thoughtful sessions proved instrumental in understanding the unique needs of each community and enabling us to refine our approach for optimal impact.

Chronic Pain Management

In October 2023, Joanna Wong, PT, DPT, brought crucial knowledge to the seniors at Waltham Senior Home with her engaging presentation on chronic pain management. Two distinct sessions were conducted, one in English and another in Chinese, to meet the diverse linguistic needs of the community and ensure accessibility and comprehension for all attendees. This initiative reflects our commitment to providing valuable health education in a linguistically inclusive manner. Joanna's expertise offered the seniors effective strategies to manage chronic pain, enhancing their quality of life and empowering them with essential health knowledge.

EACH and AgeSpan: Pioneering Culturally-Tailored Health Programs

In its October 6, 2023 article, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) highlighted EACH's innovative partnership with AgeSpan to address linguistic and cultural gaps in health care for Chinese Americans under the leadership of Sara Tan. This collaboration has resulted in the creation of best practices for culturally and linguistically appropriate health services, such as training local leaders in native languages and incorporating family and traditional activities into health programs. This strategic approach, featured by NCOA, demonstrates EACH's commitment to overcoming health disparities and improving the well-being of the Chinese-American community.

Community-Based Diabetes Awareness Events for Asian Americans

Prediabetes affects one in three people in the United States. If left untreated, most people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within five years, putting them at risk for various complications such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputations. To raise awareness and empower individuals to take action, EACH held diabetes education outreach programs targeting the Asian American community in Lexington, Quincy, and Watertown, MA during the 3rd quarter of 2022. By increasing understanding of prediabetes and its prevention and treatment, we hope to make a positive impact in the fight against this growing health concern.
