The Dolphin-Fisher Project

Revealing the Mechanism of a unique Human-Animal Interaction

Established in the 1980s, the research project on the interaction between dolphins and fishermen at Laguna, Brazil, has revealed many fascinating facets of this intriguing behaviour. Since 2018, the project has been focussed on employing state-of-the-art approaches to reveal the mechanisms that underlie this apparent cooperation, and how the conservation of this system will be impacted by changes to the environment. The project has been funded by a joint Brazil—Germany cooperation grant from CAPES and DAAD, and from a National Geographic Explorers grant.
