Attributes of Essay #1 - Synthesis

The synthesis essay is an argumentative essay. You must make a strong case for a particular point of view. However, as in all arguments, you must also acknowledge the strengths found in counter-arguments.

1. Good Introduction. Introduce the topic and your perspective on that topic. Establish a firm foundation. Argue your thesis throughout the remainder of your essay.

2. Sources: Who said it? To whom? For what purpose? Understand the rhetorical pyramid for each source. You must not misrepresent a perspective. Use direct citations. Use indirect citations. But cite BOTH. Do not summarize these sources in your essay. Use the sources either to support or to refute. Make YOUR point (not your sources' points) - use them to support your arguments (not as your arguments).

3. Have a good structural narrative. Maintain good diction, syntax, and mechanics. Clarify your position. Support it.

4. Create good arguments/points.

5. Write a good conclusion.

Attributes of an excellent essay:

* Create an argument that is independent of any provided source.

* Come up with 1 or 2 examples of your own as well as using and citing 3 provided sources.

* Evaluate your chosen 3 sources. Do not just use them. (Criticize, Discuss, Praise)

* Write in a good, academic, confident tone.
