GW National Forest, WV (October 2016)

how different the sound of rain

on canvas – on the hard-packed earth

and fallen leaves –

than on a window

somehow it is quieter

than silence,

more restful than stillness

in the dark its gray

cacophony surrounds you,

easing the transition

between wakefulness

and sleep

and back again

blurring the hard edges

of awareness
