Potting Bench

Hi Laura, these are the assembly instructions for your bench - configured for mobile phone.

Step 1 - Identify all the parts

We will count later the ‘reused decking boards from the old gate’ that will make the Top and Shelf. Without them there should be 26 Pieces of the lengths shown (the 47x25 are outlined on the list). Each piece is marked with the ‘code’ shown. To help you orient the pieces the markings will he hidden when they are fixed in position. So if ‘when to are locating a piece’ you will be able to see the ‘markings’ then turn the piece until you will not be able to see the markings.

Assemble the leg frames

OK when you feel you have identified all the pieces. Collect together the eight pieces for the side leg frames (Legs Back, Legs Front, Legs Rails Top and Bottom = 8 pieces)

Lay the set for the left leg frame flat on the trestles and position the pieces like the drawing below. Ensure the legs are parallel at 550mm. The bottom rail is 435mm up from the bottom. And the Top Rail has a 25mm gap at the back. Use a set square or similar to ensure all the angles are 90º. Cramp all four joints and secure with screws. Repeat for the Right Leg Frame.

Left and Right leg frames made as a pair, which means they are the same but opposite (like pair of shoes) Secure the parts with screws in the pre drilled holes from the outside.

Prepare the Rails

Back Top Rail

Front Top Rail

After you have prepared the front and back Top Rails. You can assemble the bench.

Need an extra pair of hands. Take the Back Top Rail you have just prepared and it should locate itself in the 25mm (notch) screw through from the back at each end .

Take the Front Top Rail you have just prepared and make the underside of the 47 x 25 (the piece you have just added) flush with the bottom of the end rails. This should make the top of the rail 75mm down from the top of the rail ends. Secure with screws from the front into the ‘legs’.

Now take the two ‘shelf under rails’ position as shown and prepare to screw from the outside, You will need to mark the screw positions, drill and countersink all eight holes before screwing into the rails.

Position the Top Board and secure with screws from the top into the legs. It should overhang 25mm at each end.

Assemble the 'box'

Gather together the parts for the box

Box Sides (150 wide) 2 0.380Box Sides (150 wide) 2 0.413Box Bottom 5 0.380Box Lip 47 x 25 2 0.380

Screw together the sides. Then screw the bottom from underneath then add the lips. Use a set square or similar to ensure all the angles are 90º before fixing the bottom.

Worktop and Shelf

Now it is time to consider re-purposing the decking boards from the old gate. When removed from the gate, if they are 915 long then I can arrange for them to be re-cut to 560 and 355. The boards to form the worktop can be secured with screws from underneath and the boards to form the shelf from above. Keep the boards for the shelf away from the back 100mm for clearance...
