Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to examine how composites strengthen material. Furthermore, it also explores how the dimensions of a material effect it's resistance to bending and distortion.
Procedure
2.Mix two resins together in a cup to create the necessary matrix.
3.Cut the fiberglass into 2x12 pieces, you will need 8 of them(2 per block).
4.On the large face of the first block apply the resin and place the fiberglass on it.
5. Apply more resin and place a second layer on the fiberglass.
6. Apply a last layer of resin on the face
Beam Construction
1. Cut two blocks of phone out of the slabs, one of dimensions 2x2x12 in and another of 2x.5x12 in.
1a. To cut the block slide the block through the hot wire.
Matrix & Reinforcement
We only used bidirectional fiberglass
2.Mix two resins together in a cup to create the necessary matrix.

6. Apply a last layer of resin on the face
Finished Composites
After the beams cured we cut some of the rough edges of the fiberglass that got left off at the end
Deflection Testing
We used a stress tester to test the strength of the composite beams.
Small beam broken
Large beam broken
The above picture demonstrates how to calculate the moment of Inertia of a rectangular beam. the higher the moment of inertia is the more resistant the beam is to deformation.
The above picture demonstrates how to calculate the deflection of a beam. The moment of inertia is in the denominator so the higher it is the lower the denominator is.
Conclusion
1. Based upon this information, explain if this materials appropriate for use as a main wing spar.
While the material was strong considering its components, it does not hold nearly enough weight to sustain a plane wing during flight.
2. Explain if it is appropriate for an aircraft floor.
While the material was strong considering its components, it does not hold nearly enough weight to sustain cargo.
3. Explain if it is appropriate for a strut.
Due to the material's nature it could be used effectively as a strut to support the main spar of the wing.
