Union democracy

Unions need to be schools for democracy for teachers promoting internal democracy and the preparation of teachers to lead their own unions . Internal organizational democracy is essential for unions to serve as schools for democracy. That is an authoritarian structure can not teach democratic participation.

Educational unions must strive for the survival of public education, the right to worker union representation on the job, and the promotion of democratic unions in the society. Unions can not promote these values well unless they exhibit these values in their own work and internal processes. Internal union democracy and broad participation must be an integral part of union life. This is difficult. Few unions achieve these goals.

A commitment to open and democratic union participation, an open union culture , and a commitment to the union as a school that teachers democracy to its members, are essential elements of successful democratic unions. November. 2012.
