EOP
EOP was created at Sac State to improve the access and retention of low-income, first-generation college students. It provides academic advising, personal counseling, tutoring and a grant for eligible students. Its other services include the Summer Bridge Academy, Transfer Bridge, Learning Communities, the ARISE Project and the Senior Success Program.
EOP students are California residents or students who qualify for AB540 by coming from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. Each year, EOP admits 250 first-time freshmen and 150 incoming transfer students. The program currently serves over 1,900 students in total each year.
“The 45th anniversary commemorated the many successes that the Educational Opportunity Program has realized through its dedicated staff and innovative programming,” says Marcellene L. Watson-Derbigny, associate vice president of Student Retention and Academic Success. “The program provides signature initiatives that impact the success of first-generation students on campus as one of the most comprehensive student retention efforts at the University.”
EOP students are individuals who have the potential to succeed at Sacramento State but have not been able to realize their higher-education goals because of their economic and/or educational background. The program strives to provide services that support students, such as academic advising, career counseling, retention services and specialized Learning Communities, all with the goal of increasing student academic success.
