In light of my family recently getting a new puppy, I thought I would write a post about migraine dogs. Everyone has unique triggers that cause their migraines, and learning the warning signs for when you're about to get a migraine can be helpful in preventing an attack. Migraine dogs are trained to pick up on psychological behaviors that indicate an oncoming migraine. They are able to pick up on signals of a migraine during the prodrome phase of a migraine cycle. As migraines develop, they go through various phases, all beginning with the prodrome phase. During this phase small changes develop in a person's central nervous system and ultimately result in migraine attacks. Migraine dogs undergo intense training. This results in heightened sensitivity concerning the owner. The migraine alert dogs notify their owners by nudging you, licking you, circling around you, not leaving your side, barking, or staring intently at you. For some sufferers, this may be a smart option to help reduce migraine attacks. Plus, you get a friendly companion!
