Standard 8- Collaborative Relationships: The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.
Rationale- I am a firm believer in Social Emotional Learning. It is difficult to comprehend that SEL was not often spoke on when I was in school but that gives me all the more reason to saturate my students with it at every opportunity. This handout has taught me the importance of providing my student's parents with a brief rundown of the components social/emotional learning has to offer. In accordance with IPTS Standards:
Standard Connections:
8J) works with all school personnel (e.g., support staff, teachers, paraprofessionals) to develop learning climates for the school that encourage unity, support a sense of shared purpose, show trust in one another, and value individuals;
8Q) establishes respectful and productive relationships with parents or guardians and seeks to develop cooperative partnerships to promote student learning and well-being;
Self-Evaluation- I understand that as a teacher, I am only one member of a team that pursues student's success. Having open lines of communication with my peers and parents will leave all roads open to feedback and understanding of the structure we set forth for our students.
Rationale-
An educator is part of a greater organization that is bigger than their classroom. An educator understands the importance of collaboration with their colleagues to ensure greater success for the school population. Providing personal skills and material that is shared with others allows for a fully-functioning learning environment. Assessments are a critical resources that are utilized to measure student's success in the classroom. There are a plethora to chose from and educators have knowledge in the one's they are familiar with. Exposing one another with other forms that utilized throughout the school will offer a broad spectrum for educators to use to better equip their instruction and provide the best resources for their student's success.
Standard Connection-
8B) understands the collaborative process and the skills necessary to initiate and carry out that process;
Self-Evaluation-
This concept will be better utilized in my professional career. I was pleased to be exposed to it beforehand because it allowed me to see the variety of assessments that are used inside the classroom. Working alongside my colleagues, we came up with a database of resources for us to use when needed. Understanding the time commitment to being a teacher does not always come with extra time. Collaborating with other professionals will build a strong, trusting rapport within the school and enrich the learning experience. Offering materials to others is a way to collaborating effectively and build lasting relationships. In the future, I will focus on delivering material that I used that may benefit others.
