Little Miss Sunshine

"Everyone just pretend to be normal"

This film could be studied from different points of view: family, unhappiness, happiness, frustration, beauty,...

We are going to concentrate on beauty for obvious reasons. Beauty and his obsession with not aging are among the most important topics dealt with in "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, and really the idea is to try and establish a connection between the novel and this awesome film. To try to understand how the concept of beauty has changed in the last century.

Olive Hoover is a little girl with a dream: winning the Little Miss Sunshine contest. Her family wants her dream to come true so they all set off for a road trip from Albuquerque to California.

DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AFTER WATCHING THE FILM:

• Is it really important to win a beauty contest?

• Has the road trip taught the family an important lesson?

• "Losers are people who are so afraid of winning they don't even try". Do you agree?

• "Sarcasm is the refuge of losers". Do you agree?

• Who is your favourite character and why?

4ºB GROUP TASK

• Divide the class into 7 groups.

• Each group will have to choose a decade from the 1950s to present day. We will draw lots if an agreement is not reached on which decade each group is going to be working on.

• Prepare a presentation with Emaze, Google slides, Prezi ... which includes information about the concept of beauty in that decade. What was fashionable? Was it "better" to be extremely thin or to be curvy? Who was the model to follow in that decade? What clothes were in at that time? What hairstyle? ...

• You can get dressed up and shoot a video to include in your presentation if you want to, but this is not compulsory.

• Your work will be presented orally to the rest of the class on Monday, 18th January.
