REFUGEE CRISIS

Refugee children walk near the Hungary border, in Serbia

Syria, a nation devastated by war

More than half of the country's population has been forced to leave their homes since the conflict began in March 2011. More than 4 million have fled as refugees to neighbouring countries and an increasing number are trying to look for shelter in European countries.

Children are especially vulnerable. They are susceptible to malnutrition and diseases. They are exposed to sexual abuse and exploitation in unfamiliar overcrowded conditions. About 2 million children are not attending school because schools have been damaged, destroyed or occupied since 2011.

Find out more about the crisis here.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 14)

"Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution"

  • What is a refugee?

  • What reasons might people have to become refugees?

  • What is the right to asylum?

  • What difficulties might refugees encounter? Think about children, women, old people.

  • How would you feel if you were forced to abandon your country?

4C. Put yourself in the shoes of a refugee family (the dad, the mum, a teenager and a 9 year old girl). One of you will have to be the interviewer. Write the interview in a google document and share it with your teacher before the 19th October. Record the interview and upload it to Spreaker. Use as many special effects as necessary. Be respectful at all times. The deadline to give your teacher the link for the recording is Monday, 26th October.
