Brief Biography Dr. Dinesh Katre is a distinguished Design Researcher and Innovator. He is well known for his expertise in Human-Computer Interaction, Design of Cognitive Systems, Design Thinking, Digital Preservation, and Computing for Cultural Heritage. He is the founder of the Human-Centred Design & Computing Group at C-DAC, Pune, where he served as the Senior Director and Head of Department. Over the past 32 years, he dedicated himself to the mission of 'Computing for Cultural Heritage', creating software tools, solutions, information systems, multimedia, and immersive reality experiences that promote this cause. He successfully nurtured a competent team of 60+ engineers and designers. He bagged several national level R & D funded projects and ensured successful and timely implementation of the same. As Principal Investigator (Grant Holder) of the projects, he has spearheaded the activities like domain research, project strategy, visioning, ideation, product management and supervision of the entire lifecycle involving design, development, testing and deployment activities.
He has a rich experience of coordinating between multi-disciplinary teams, domain institutions, international partners, and funding agencies. He has led and chaired the committees comprising of multiple senior directors and associate directors involved in the management of national programmes, projects and teams. International Awards and RecognitionDr. Katre’s innovative contributions have received the highest international recognition and accolades. He is the recipient of the highly prestigious Emmett Leahy Award 2020, which was established in the United States in 1967 to honour Emmett Joseph Leahy, a pioneer of the information management discipline. Dr. Katre is the first Indian and second Asian to have won the coveted Emmett Leahy Award. He was also recognized by the National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) with the NDSA Individual Innovation Award during DigiPres 2019, Tampa, USA. His leadership in implementing various projects has earned Manthan Digital Inclusion Awards (South Asia & Asia Pacific) in 2015 and 2012.
In 2014, he had the honour to represent India in the UNESCO’s International Experts Consultative Meet at Warsaw, Poland for drafting the Standard Setting Instrument on Safeguarding the Memory of the World in the Digital Era, which is adopted by the UNESCO. During May 2023, he was invited as an expert for in the consultative panel organized by UNESCO for G20 Working Group. Dr. Katre has served as an expert member on high-level advisory committees, contributing to the advancement of national and international digital preservation initiatives in various domains such as Indian Judiciary, National Film Heritage, Audiovisual Archives, Digital Libraries, and Science Heritage Research Initiative. Leadership and Contribution to National InitiativesPresently, he has evolved the project strategy and laid the foundations for the development of immersive reality contents for showcasing the scientific and technological advancements of India in the prestigious TechDome being built as a part of Central Vista, New Delhi. Recently in 2023, he researched and envisaged the Digital Preservation Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the entire Judiciary with a budget of Rs. 2677 Crore, which has been approved by the Chief Justice of India and sanctioned by the Law Ministry. He architected India’s National Digital Preservation Programme (NDPP) through which World’s first Trustworthy Digital Repository was established and certified as per the ISO 16363. Academic ContributionsDuring 1995-2008, he established the National Multimedia Resource Centre for propagating multimedia education through which over 2500 multimedia and computer animation professionals were trained and employed in the industry. He has also served as the Local PhD Supervisor for IIT Mumbai and Jury Member for PhD scholars from IIT Guwahati and IIIT Hyderabad. He has guided several ME, MS and B Tech engineering students from Gujarat Technology University, Amity University and BITS Pilani. He has also guided several MDes and BDes students from IIT Guwahati, IIT Mumbai, SID, NID and MITD. He has served as an expert member in the Research Recognition Committees and Board of Studies for MIT-ATD and Symbiosis University. Dr. Katre is also a member of Academic Council for Avantika University, Ujjain.
Dr. Katre has also been elected twice and served as the Vice Chair of IFIP WG 13.6 on Human Work Interaction Design. As General Chair and Co-Chair, he has organized international conferences and workshops in India and abroad. He has been invited as a keynote speaker at various national and international conferences on digital preservation and Human-Computer Interaction with full sponsorship. He has authored and published over 50 research publications which also include edited books and technical study reports to envisage national programmes. He has conceptualized, researched, and prepared digital preservation standards and guidelines, which are notified through gazette by MeitY. National & International CollaborationsDr. Katre has successfully evolved and established long term partnerships and research collaborations with several institutions at the national and international level. In his individual capacity, as a researcher, he established long term research collaborations with the NDIIPP by the Library of Congress of the United States (US) and European Alliance for Permanent Access (APA) for digital preservation research; IFIP WG TC 13.7 for his research in Human Work Interaction Design (HWID); and CultUsab by Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Denmark for his research in Cultural Usability. He is experienced in preparing the Agreements and MoUs offering coverage for research & development of software tools, software licensing, data sharing and confidentiality, training, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), content development services, maintenance, and technical support services. EducationDr. Katre holds a Ph.D. (2005) in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) from Birla Institute of Science & Technology (BITS), Pilani (sponsored and hosted by C-DAC); a Master of Design (1992) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai; and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1990) from Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Arts, University of Mumbai.
As per the book "Global Usability" edited by Ian Douglas et al., published by Springer in 2011, Dr. Katre was the recipient of the first PhD in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) awarded in India.
As a part of professional training, Dr. Katre attended the Digital Preservation Training Programme (DPTP) at the University of London Computer Centre (ULCC), London, UK, in 2010 and the High-level Training on ISO 16363 Audit & Certification of Trustworthy Digital Repositories in Den Hague, Netherlands, in 2015. HobbiesDuring 1994-1998 he formally trained in Hindusthani classical vocal singing. Thereafter, he and his son Paritosh together have engaged in music composition and singing for putting together an experimental programme on Geet Dnyaneshwari, which is meant to popularize the 13th century philosophy and poetry by Saint Dnyaneshwar. Their music compositions are a sweet spot formed by the fusion of Hindusthani Classical Ragas and Western Chords Music. So far, they both have sung, composed, and performed around 60 songs for Geet Dnyaneshwari.
