An overview of the sociological principles and concepts that shape the development, structure and function of societies, cultures, human interactions, groups, self-image, conflict, socialization, and social change.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, a student should be able to:
Apply the “sociological imagination” to the social world.
Compare and contrast the major theoretical paradigms in sociology.
Articulate and apply basic sociological concepts, including social institutions, roles, norms, sanctions, social locations, statuses, cultural diversity, and social change.
Analyze and explain the role social forces play in shaping human behavior and life changes.
Articulate the sociological research process including topic location, problem definition, literature review, data collection, and analysis.
Compare and contrast the different types of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Teaching Philosophy: My Philosophy is to try to make the course content as interesting as possible but understanding that the burden is on the student to motivate themselves to learn. Online classes especially require self discipline on the part of the students. I will try to grade assignments within 5 days if possible.

Grading: It is the responsibility of the student to become familiar with the dates and CSN policies concerning withdrawing from a class – a grade of “W” cannot be given by the instructor at the time grades are submitted.
PARTICIPATION: Participation scores will be graded based on the first discussion forum on the class website. Discussions will need minimally 2 orginal posts and two replies for a passing score. Discussion posts are limited to the videos and powerpoints linked to the site, and should be substantiative (not a simple description ) but demonstrate some critical thinking and/or an insight you gained ). Replies should also be substantative and not simply agreeing.
Critical thinking: Potentially addresses one of these three points: 1. Causes or consequences of the situation. 2. Similar or dissimilar situations. 3. what group is benefitting from the situation.
Further discussion is optional and ungraded.
Quizzes: Cover the assigned readings in the Openstax book and that week’s videos and ARE OPEN BOOK ONLINE. YOU MAY DROP THE THREE LOWEST SCORES. You have two tries on the first two quizzes, then one attempt thereafter.
SCORING:
Quizzes (14) 110 points
Final Exam 30 points
Mini Paper 5 points
Discussion 5 points
GRADING:
135-150 = A
120-134 = B
105-119 = C
90-104 = D
Below 90 = F
TOTAL = 150 points plus (5 pts for extra credit)
Late assignments will be credited at 50% for the first 24 hours, 25% after that. Quizzes will not be made up but lowest 3 scores are dropped.
Discussion Etiquette: Simple. Do unto others as thou would have done unto thou. Do not be rude.

See above link for more information.
Objectionable Materials
Some students may find some material presented in class to be objectionable. The instructor has the discretion to choose to remove it or not.
