Old Sam
Words & Music by Crag Jensen
Twelve years old at the Tastee-Freez
Ice cream drippin’ down on my knees
On a hot summer’s day
Sittin’ and lickin’ and takin’ a peek
At the run-down sheds across the street
And wonderin’ what to say
About that raunchy smell that would fill the air
From goats and chickens that lived over there
Just across the way.
Yeah – there were goats and chickens and a dog and a cat
And a funny little man in a railroad hat.
Old Sam,
What’s up with him?
Old, Sam, old Sam Prim.
Some say he was a well-read man
Which only makes it harder to understand
Just why he lived that way.
Like some hermit on a mysterious quest
Holding his cards close to his breast
And dreaming of a better day
Forever longing – to fly away.
Goats and chickens and a dog and a cat
And a funny little man in a railroad hat
Old Sam,
Do you remember him?
Old, Sam, old Sam Prim.
On a cold and snowy winter’s morn
Old Sam tried to brave the storm
But why – no one knows.
They found him lying by the side of the road
With a wad of cash pinned in his clothes
Or so the story goes.
Goats and chickens and a dog and a cat
And a funny little man in a railroad hat
Old Sam,
Do you remember him?
Old, Sam, old Sam Prim.
They carted him off to the loony-bin
Where they scrubbed him up and locked him in
Even though – he was quite sane
Well, it wasn’t long before he passed away
And all anybody had to say
Was – “oh my - what a shame.”
Goats and chickens and a dog and a cat
And a funny little man in a railroad hat
Old Sam,
Do you remember him?
Old, Sam, old Sam Prim.
Old Sam.
