Samuel Cox, son of Isaac Cox, was born 1831-1834 in Greenville County, South Carolina. He joined the Confederate Army as a private on March 10, 1862, during the Civil War, served in Company A, 43rd Regiment, the Cherokee Van Guards, and died of typhoid fever in an Atlanta hospital. He is buried in Atlanta’s historic Oakland Cemetery.
He married Rachel Land on January 16, 1852. She was the daughter of Isaac Land and Rebecca Bivins Land, buried in Bethany Cemetery in adjacent Pickens County. Rachel’s birth dates and date of death are not unknown. But Census records indicate she was born sometime around 1833 (most likely in North Carolina) and died after 1910. 1910 Georgia/Pickens Census, Page 238, Persimmon Tree Dist. indicates she was living in household of sister and brother in law, Richard Cook; information shows she is a widow who has given birth to 6 children with only one living at the time.
Their children were:
1. James Isaac Cox. Born January 7, 1854, in Cherokee County, Georgia. Died March 12, 1931. Married to Martha Emiline Cline and later Eva Foster.
2. Mary Rebecca Cox. Born September 1858. Died December 1900 and buried in Gilmer County, Georgia. Married to Rufus P. Morris.
