Our earliest known Cox ancestor is William Cox in North Carolina by the 1770s, and possibly earlier. But the Cox name goes back to ancient Anglo-Saxon Britain. The name is first found in Herefordshire, where Coxes were based from very ancient times, some say before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D., according to some sources.
Some of the first Cox settlers in the United States were: William Coxe, who settled in Virginia in 1610; Anne Coxe, who settled in Maryland in 1633; James Cox, who came to Virginia in 1652; and Henry Cox, who settled in Maryland in 1653. Maybe one day we can prove a direct link to these settlers or discover if William was the first of his Cox line to land on the shores of this country.
This section presents some of the information we've gathered about our direct line of Coxes. Related families are not as thoroughly represented, although additions are planned in the future.
A page is devoted to each generation, which can be navigated by the "Cox generations" menu on each page (or within the main site navigation). Within that page, the names bolded are linked out to other pages.
