See Untangling William Coxes in early Orange County, North Carolina
Mark Chilton, the register of deeds for Orange County, North Carolina, in modern times has done a terrific service to those researching family history. He compiled several land records along with the land’s “fingerprints” so to speak so researchers can more easily trace family connections and origins. More info in the links.
Below is every Cox mention in the 2 posts by Mark Chilton:
Recovered colonial deeds (Deed Book Zero Project)
For each, I’ve tried to identify if they are from 1) the Quaker Cox line, 2) the William Cox (d. 1783 Abbeville, SC) line, 3) my William Cox (died 1814 Greenville, SC) line, 4) some other line or total unknown. It is one of the things that helped untangle all the William Coxes in early Orange County, North Carolina. This page is a kind of “showing my math” on that.
Having the history of a tract of land, as well as the names of the survey chain carriers (SCC) and witnesses helps illuminate family/neighbor ties. For example, seeing that the chain carriers for a survey were Thomas Cox and Solomon Cox makes it pretty much a certainty that the William Cox who bought that land was the father (or perhaps the brother) of those two, all in the same family of Quaker Coxes. Or in some instances, the same people were chain carriers and witnesses to deeds for each other in land purchases around a specific geographic feature (Eno River or the Deep River, for example).
Note: there are other deeds/land records as well but this just concentrates on the transactions in those two posts.
For a key to abbreviations, please see Chilton’s posts linked above.

[[THIS ONE WAS QUESTIONABLE. The location is Haw River/Cane Creek, but the people involved were usually working with the Quakers. We are leaning toward this being Quaker William Cox Jr., son of William, and him branching out from Deep River. Cane Creek Meeting House, of which he was a member, is next door. On the other side of the argument, our William Cox bought land in this same area in 1772. ]]
