We knew Samuel Cox (b. 1831-1834 ) died of typhoid fever in 1862 during the Civil War and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. But in 2020, new records were digitized at the Atlanta History Center and we found more details about where he died. In these records, we see that he actually died at Gate City Hospital in Atlanta (below). The records also list his date of death as June 15. We had June 13, based on other military records.
In the USGenWeb Archives (via the biography of a doctor) Gate City Hospital "was located in a second-rate hotel of 32 rooms and was constantly overcrowded with patients." In an old genealogy forum, someone gave more info about the hospital/hotel they got from "Atlanta and Environs A Chronicle of Its People and Events" by Franklin M. Garrett, University of Georgia Press, Athens, Pub. 1954. (Vol. 1, page 530): "I found that Gate City Hospital was actually Gate City Hotel and later named American Hotel, and was located at the corner of Alabama and Pryor Streets. The hotels were located across from the railroad tracks and at least 4 hotels plus other establishments were turned into hospitals because of the influx of wounded and dying soldiers."
