You'll see in the photo of the handwritten census document, pages 107-108, these names. Most of the time, if the names are near each other, as these are all on two pages, it means that these families lived near each other. We know that the Brashers, Paynes and Pyles were all related families. (CLICK photo to enlarge).
There are two William Coxes listed. We assume they are William Cox 1 and his son William Cox Jr. See below.
Note: All are Greenville County, South Carolina
We *think* the second William listed on this page is "our" William Cox. But who are the other people living with him in 1790?
We don't know when his first wife died. He didn't marry his second wife, Mary Langford, until after 1794 when her first husband died. We also think the math adds up that one of his youngest daughters, Rebecca, was probably still living at home. Her husband, George Croft, isn't in the 1790 Census and they were both probably living in their respective families' households. So that would be two of the three free white females. Who is the other?
For the males:
One scenario is that perhaps Isaac, an adult son and his family, were living with them. The two under 16 years could be Isaac's two sons James b 1778 and Abraham b 1783, and his wife. There's no "Isaac Cox" in the Census, but there is a separate entry for Isaac "Cocks" that *could* be him as well. See below for Isaac Cocks.
Another scenario could be various other people living with them, including a younger household made up of a young husband and wife and two small sons. Maybe this is the elusive Alice's side of the family?
OR is the other William Cox entry the older William's household altogether and we have it mixed up???

William Cox (We think this is William 1's son, William Jr.) - the first one listed in the Census
1 free white males 16 years+ including heads of families [[William Jr.]]
1 free white males under 16 years of age [[one of his sons. We don't know birth years for all his children but they are early 1790s so would fit time frame of children]]
2 free white females including heads of families
But there is an Isaac Cocks in Greenville -- The math doesn't necessarily add up for this. Our Isaac Cox had three sons -- or at least three that we know lived to adulthood. He would only have two known sons at the time of the 1790 Census. That's not to say he didn't have two others who died. We don't have birth years for all of his daughters, but he had five.

*** Abraham Cox (this is most likely son of William. Listed as Abram)
Also listed on page: Isaac Payne, John Payne, William Payne (Abraham's wife was a Payne so this further supports that this is "our" Abraham); William Brasure (see below); Samuel Brasure (see below); Thomas Brasure; William Richardson; Hance Black; David Black; Thomas Long (see below); James Lee

*** William Brashier (husband of Sarah Cox, daughter of William)
There are two William Brasure/Brasher in Greenville Co: We think Sarah's husband is the first one, with just the couple. We believe Sarah was one of the younger children of William Cox 1, and born in the 1770s. That would make her around 20 in 1790.

** Rebecca Cox - She married George Croft
We could not find George Croft in the 1790 SC Census. This could be perhaps because Rebecca and George were still young and living with their respective families and not married yet. We believe Rebecca was one of the youngest of William Cox 1's children. If so, that would be an additional female in William 1's househould at the top of this page.
