Family Matters - 17.The Family of Edward Goninan and Catherine Williams
Edward was the first child of Richard Goninan and Mary Ann Tellam. He was baptised at Camborne Church on the 6th April 1811. He married Catherine Williams at Camborne Church on the 24th Feb 1834. Both were of Camborne Parish and both made their mark.
After Catherine died on the 15th October 1875, Edward married Elizabeth Edwards at the Redruth Registry Office on the 13th Nov 1878. Elizabeth was a spinster, age 51 of North Parade, Camborne. Both made their mark. The witnesses were Emma Edwards and Eliza Edwards. The witnesses were probably the daughters of Edward’s niece Elizabeth Goninan, daughter of Edward’s brother, Richard. She had married Hannibal Edwards. The Elizabeth Edwards who was Edward’s second wife was the sister of Hannibal so Edward had married his niece’s sister-in-law.
Edward died on the 23rd July 1882 and was buried in Camborne Churchyard on the 27th July. There is a headstone and remembered with him are Catherine, his daughter Emily and granddaughter Emily Hosking and also Elizabeth his second wife who died in 1885. The gravestone was vandalised but it was repaired thanks to contributions from various family members.

1841 Edward and Catherine were living in Connor Downs with their children, Edward, Richard and John Williams. Edward was a copper miner.
1851 Still living in Connor Downs and with Edward, Richard, John Williams, Elizabeth, William Henry, Matthew, Catherine Jane and Eliza Ann. Edward jnr (age 16) and Richard (age 130 were both copper miners. Catherine's Parish of birth was Crowan.
1861 Still living in Connor Downs. At home are William, Matthew, Catherine, Eliza Ann and Emily. Both William and Matthew were miners
1871 Edward and Catherine had moved to Crane in Camborne. At home are Elizabeth (mine labourer) and Emily and a granddaughter Emily Hosking who was an illegitimate child of Elizabeth’s.
1881 Edward is in Crane with his second wife, Elizabeth, and his unmarried daughter, Elizabeth. Edward, now 70, was still a miner.
Edward’s Will – dated 24th Jan 1882 and witnessed by Mortimer Tangye and Arthur Richards. Edward left his estate to his second wife Elizabeth and on her demise to his children then living on a ‘share and share’ alike basis. The estate was valued at £110

1.1 Edward Goninan
Edward was baptised at Gwinear Parish Church on the 17th August 1834
He married Sarah Faull at Phillack Parish Church on the 19th July 1857. They were both living at Trevassack in Hayle. Edward was a miner and Sarah a widow aged 29. Her father, George Uren, was a miner. Both made their mark and the witnesses were James Uren and Elizabeth Faull.
Edward died in 1886 and was buried in Camborne Churchyard on the 22nd June

1871 Living in Moor Street, Camborne with their three children and one of the step-daughters, Elizabeth Faull
1881 Sarah is living in Moor Street, Camborne with Mary and William. Mary was a dressmaker and William a wheelwright. Maybe Edward snr (and jnr) was overseas.
1891 Sarah was living alone in Moor Street, Camborne
1.2 Elizabeth Goninan
Elizabeth was baptised at Gwinear Parish Church on the 29th November 1835. She died when only two and was buried at Gwinear on the 5th Feb. 1838
1.3 Richard Goninan
Richard was baptised at Gwinear Parish Church on the 14th May 1837
Richard married Caroline Rowe at the Weslyan Chapel at Copperhouse in Hayle on the 15th April 1860. Both were then living at Copperhouse. Caroline was 26 and her father, William, (then deceased) had been a copper miner. Both made their mark and the witnesses were John Bond and William Mitchell. This was probably the first family marriage in a Methodist Chapel. Richard and Caroline died in 1898 (not verified)
Children:- John, Richard Henry, John Williams (1), John Williams (2), Jane and William Edward. The first child, John, was born in 1861 and baptised at Camborne Parish Church on the 18th April 1864 as John William(s). This was just before he died. He was buried on the 25th April 1864. The third child, John Williams was born on the 14th May 1865 and baptised on the 31st May and buried on the 5th June. The fourth child, John Williams was born in 1867 and died in 1872 aged 5. Jane Goninan was baptised at Camborne on the 1st July 1868 but cannot be found on the GRO. She is not on the 1871 census so it is assumed she died although no burial has been found.

1861 Living in William Street, Camborne with Caroline and son John. Also in the house is John Henry Rowe aged 5, born in Charlestown and shown as son in law. This could be a brother of Caroline or even an illegitimate son. Richard was a tin miner.
1871 Living in Tolcarne Street, Camborne with their children Richard, John Williams and William. John Henry Rowe is now shown as James, assuming this is the same person. He is described as step son and born St Austell rather than Charlestown
1881 Still in Tolcarne Street with their two surviving children, Richard and William. Richard and his sons were tin miners.
1891 Again Tolcarne Street, only William (tin miner) is at home and Richard is now described as a labourer
1.4 John Goninan
John was baptised on the 3rd Nov 1838 at Gwinear Parish Church. He died when seven months old and was buried at Gwinear on the 20th May 1839
1.5 John Williams Goninan
John Williams was baptised at Gwinear Parish Church on the 26th April 1840. He died in 1856 and was buried at Gwinear on the 25th December

1.6 Elizabeth Goninan
Elizabeth was baptised at Gwinear Parish Church on the 5th December 1841.
Children:- Elizabeth had an illegitamate child, Emily in 1865. Emily died in 1881 and is buried with Edward. On the gravestone her name is recorded as Emily Hosking Goninan.

1.7 William Henry Goninan
William Henry was baptised at Gwinear Parish Church on the 20th August 1843. He was a miner all of his life.
He married his cousin, Grace Goninan at Gwithian Parish Church on the 6th Sept 1863. They were both living in Connor Downs. William signed his name and Grace made her mark. The witnesses were Joseph Clark and William Hosken.
Grace died in 1880 and William then married Elizabeth Gribble at Redruth Registry Office on the 8th Jan 1881. Elizabeth was 43, a spinster and living in Connor Downs. Her father, then deceased, was Matthew Gribble, a miner. Both made their mark and the witnesses were William Henry Goninan jnr and Mary Rule.
In the same year William Henry jnr married Caroline Gribble who was the younger sister of Elizabeth (by some 19 years) meaning that William Henry jnr’s sister-in-law was also his step-mother!
William Henry died in 1900 and was buried at Gwithian on the 17th October 1900. Elizabeth died in 1898.

1.8 Matthew Goninan
Matthew was born 1844 (baptism not found)
He married Julia Ann Simms at the Wesley Chapel in Camborne on the 31st Oct 1864. They were both living in Union St. Julia was a spinster, aged 20 and her father was Samuel Simms (then deceased), a tin miner. Matthew signed and Julia made her mark. The witnesses were William Tippett and Catherine Jane Goninan.
There is the following entry in the family bible:- Matthew Goninan left Crane for America 14th Sept 1867. He has not been found after this. Julia died in 1908.

1871 Julia was living with her mother in Camborne with her daughter, Catherine. Julia is not shown as widowed. Catherine has not been found after this.
1881 Julia was living in Centenary Row but she is calling herself Sims (but married) and she has a daughter Annie Sims aged 1. This child was registered quarter ended June 1879.
1891 Julia was living in Centenary Row in the home of Elizabeth Williams as a border. She is now a widow. With her is Anna Goninon age 12 born Camborne

1.9 Catherine
Catherine was born on the 25th Jan 1846 in Connor Downs. She died and was buried at Gwinear Parish Church on the 1st May
1.10 Catherine Jane
Catherine was born in 1847 (baptism not found).
Catherine married William Tucker at Camborne Parish Church on the 8th Feb 1872. William was living in Stoke Climsland, was 25 and a mason. His father was Edward Tucker and he was a miner. Catherine was a domestic servant and living in Crane. Both signed their names and the witnesses were Emily Goninan and John Duckham.

1.11 Eliza Ann
Eliza Ann was baptised on the 8th April 1849 at Gwinear Parish Church.
She married William Teppett (Tippet) at Camborne Parish Church on the 9th June 1866. William was 22 and a labourer as was his father, Thomas. He made his mark and Eliza signed. The witnesses were Reginald Sowden and Ellen Teppett.

1.12 Emily
Emily was baptised on the 6th Feb 1853 at Gwinear Parish Church.
She died on the 14th Sept 1880 of liver disease at the Invalid Asylum in Stoke Newington, London. She is buried at Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington but is also recorded on her father’s headstone in Camborne Churchyard although here her date of death is recorded as the 15th September and her age as 25 whereas she was 27.
