William Goninan
Parents:- Richard Goninan and Mary Ann Tellam
William was baptised at Crowan Church on the 1st April 1819.
He married Grace Hosking on the 18th July 1842 at St Just Parish Church. Both made their mark. At that time William was living in Churchtown, St Just. Grace was a spinster, aged 21 and also living in Churchtown. Grace’s father was John Hosking, a husbandman. The witnesses were John Hosking and John Tregear.
William died in 1884 and was buried at Gwithian Church on the 20th February. There is a gravestone. Grace died in 1894.
Children:- Grace, Mary Jane, William, Ann, Elizabeth, Alice, Catherine Frances, Jennifer, Martha, Frances Hosking and Louisa. All of the children were born in Gwithian Parish.

1841 William, a miner, was lodging with James Sheer in Priness Street, Bosorne New Downs in St Just
1851 William and Grace were living in Prazelore, Gwithian Parish with their children Grace, Mary Jane, William, Ann and Elizabeth. William was a copper miner and his birth place was given as Camborne. Grace and the children were all born in Gwithian Parish.
1861 Living in Connor Downs. William was still a copper miner but his birth place is now given as Gwinear. The following children were living at home, Grace,Mary, Elizabeth, Alice, Catherine, Jane (Jennifer) and Martha. Two other children, William and Ann are in the house of their grandparents, John and Mary Hosking who must have moved back to Gwithian from St Just.
William jnr was an agricultural labourer whilst Grace, Mary and Ann were mine workers although Ann was only eleven.
1871 Living in Prazelore. William was now a tin miner and his birth place is given as Crowan (which is probably right). At home are Elizabeth, Alice, Catherine, Jennifer, Martha and Louisa. Grace, Mary Jane and Ann are all married. William is probable in Cleater Moor where he was married in 1872. Another child, Frances Hosking, had been born in 1862 but died the same year and was buried at Gwithian
1881 Living at Connor Downs. William was a copper miner and his birth place is given as Crowan. Only one child, Louisa, was at home. Elizabeth, Alice, Jennifer and Martha have married. Catherine is unaccounted for.
1891 Grace, now a widow, was living at Connerton in Connor Downs. With her are Frederick and Louisa Cock (her daughter) and their two children

Grace was baptised at Gwinear Church on the 12th May 1844
She married her cousin William Henry Goninan (son of Edward) on the 6th Sept 1863 at Gwithian Church. Both were living in Connor Downs.
Grace died in 1880 and was buried at Gwithian on the 8th September

Mary Jane Goninan

Mary Jane was baptised at Gwinear Church on the 14th Sept 1845
She married Arthur Oats at Gwithian Church on the 4th Dec 1864. They were both living in Connor Downs and they both made their mark. Arthur was 21 and a miner. His father, James Oats was also a miner. The witnesses were William and James Hosking.
Mary Jane died in 1882. Arthur married Mary Plynt in 1884
Children – Grace Ann, Bessie, James, Elizabeth Mary, Jane, John and Arthur. All the children were born in Gwithian

William Goninan

William was baptised at Gwinear Church on the 5th September 1847
He married Margaret Grenfell at St John Church, Cleator Moor, Cumberland on the 27th July 1872. They were living at 2 Fletcher Street and they both made their mark. Margaret’s father was Thomas Grenfell, a miner. William was also a miner, The witnesses were Richard and Elizabeth Ann Grenfell.
At some point between 1878 and 1880 William and Margaret migrated to the Upper Michigan.
William died in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the 22nd April 1902.
Margaret died on the 29th Nov 1907 in Arlecdon near Whitehaven probably on a visit to her sister.

1851 William was living with his parents, William and Grace, in Prazelore, Connor Downs together with his siblings, Grace, Mary, Ann and Elizabeth
1861 Still in Prazelore but living with his grandparents, John and Mary Hosking together with his sister Ann. William, now aged 13, was an agricultural labourer.
1871 Not found in 1871 but probably in Cleator Moor where he was married in the following year.
1880 William and Margaret were in Franklin, Houghton, Upper Michigan with their four children, Grace, Elizabeth, Margaret and Thomas. All four children had been born in England.
1901 In 1896 or thereabouts William and Margaret and family moved to Rossland, Kootenay,British Columbia. On the 1901 Canadian Census William is described as a goldminer and a Methodist. At home are their children, Edward, Richard, Minnie and William

She married Edward Roberts at Gwithian Parish Church on the 21st Jan 1871. Edward was 22, a herdsman and living in Phillack. His father was Richard Roberts. They both made their mark and the witnesses were W.Goninan and J.H.Whitford (who later married her sister, Elizabeth)

Elizabeth Goninan

Elizabeth was born in 1850.
She married Joseph Henry Whitford, a miller aged 24, at Phillack Parish Church on the 30th May 1874. Joseph’s father, Job Whitford, was also a miller. Joseph signed and Elizabeth made her mark. The witnesses were William Goninan and Charles Whitford.

1871 Now twenty she is still living with her parents in Prazelore. No occupation is shown but this is unlikely
1881 Now married she is living with Joseph and three children, Catherine, Charles and William, in Roache’s Way in Redruth. Joseph is a brewery engine driver. The children were born in Hayle.
1891 Joseph and Elizabeth and their five children are now at 13 North Street, Redruth. Joseph is described as a driver. Katie (Catherine) is working at a fuse factory and Charlie is an errand boy. Joseph jnr and John were born in Redruth
1901 Elizabeth was living in North Street, Redruth. She is widowed. With her are Charles (safety fuse labourer), Joe (market gardener) and John. Also a boarder, Stephen Nicholls
1911 Elizabeth was living in North Street, Redruth with her son Charles who was a labourer.
Alice Goninan

Alice was born on the 14th Sept. 1852 at Connor Downs
She married Nicholas Rowe at Gwithian Parish Church on the 2nd Nov. 1874. They were both living in Connor Downs. Nicholas was 23 and a labourer. His father, also Nicholas Rowe, was a miner. They both made their mark.

Catherine Frances Goninan

Catherine was born in 1855 and baptised at Gwithian Parish Church on the 12th Oct. 1859.
Catherine married Joseph Crewes on the 29th April 1876 at the Weslyan Chapel at Wall. Joseph was 22 and a farm labourer. He was living at Herland in Gwinear. The marriage certificate shows Grose not Crewes but this is almost certainly an error by the Registrar.

Jennifer Goninan
(note:- in the 19th century and earlier the names Jennifer and Jane were interchangeable)

Jennifer was born in 1857 and was baptised at Gwithian Parish Church on the 12th October 1859.
Jane married Stephen Barnes on the 24th May 1879 at the Wesleyan Chapel at Wall. Stephen was 22, a mariner and his father was William Barnes (dec’d) who had been a miner. Stephen was living at Angarrack. Jane was living at Connor Downs. Stephen signed and Jane made her mark.

Martha Goninan

Martha was baptised at Gwithian Parish Church on the 12th October 1859 although her birth was register first quarter 1859
Martha married Thomas Paull at St John’s Parish Church, Cleator Moor in Cumberland on the 28th August 1874. Thomas was 20 and a miner. His father was William Paull, a ropemaker. Thomas signed and Martha made her mark. Martha’s brother, William, was a witness, Martha gave her age as 17 whereas she was really 15. It’s believed that Marta went to the Upper Michigan in 1881.
She married a second time, to Charles Remphrey in Hancock, Upper Michigan, on the 8th Feb 1883. They were both living in Franklin and Charles was 40 and a miner. Charity Kendall, daughter of Jennifer Goninan (Martha’s aunt) was a witness.

No children have been found from Martha’s first marriage.
Known children from her second marriage are:- Martha, Charles (1890), Charles (1893)and Ralph
Charles died in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on the 18th March 1898.

Frances Hosking Goninan

Frances was born on the 22nd Jan 1862 and baptised at home on the 20th May. She died on the 28th May and was burief at Gwithian Parish Church
Louisa Goninan

Louisa was born on the 17th November 1865 in Gwithian Parish
Her first marriage was to Frederick Cock in 1887. Frederick was a farm labourer.
Frederick died in 1897 following an accident when he was run over by a cart. Louisa’s was pregnant at the time with their fourth child
Louisa’s second marriage was to James Harris on the 25th June 1898 at Gwithian Parish Church. James was a gamekeeper, 28 and from Andover.
