12th July, 1971
The above photo was sent to me by Colin Sarjeant who was the school secretary’s son. On the back of the photo is given the date it was taken and where it was taken "on the quadrangle at Copthorne School”, and by whom it was taken: Lynn Jennings. Lynn was a pupil at the school and the 12th July, 1971 was her final day at school.
It was was taken on what was presumably the last day of school’s penultimate academic. As a secondary modern school Copthorne was to close exactly a year and a day after the photograph was taken.
The photo shows the then school head, Mr. Jenkins, the female deputy head, Mrs. Edwards, the school secretary Mrs Serjeant, and the school male deputy head Mr. Bannister. Mr. Jenkins and and Mr. Bannister were appointed to their positions two years earlier following Mr. Hall’s retirement.
Earlier in that year, in March ‘71, Mr. Bannister had been appointed a year head at President Kennedy after Copthorne closed.
Another photo taken by Lynn on her last day at school in 1971. Two, as yet, unidentified teachers, though Lynn thinks one was an art teacher. Or possibly only one was a teacher.
The pupil seen with Mrs. Pollard is Shirley Judd on a visit apparently to Wicksteed Park.
Copthorne's two head masters- Mr Hall and Mr Jenkins January 1970
On the 7th of January 1970 the school made a donation of £200 to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association which led to the above report and photograph appearing in the Coventry Evening Telegraph the following day. Mr. Hall who had retired in the previous July returned to the school to present the cheque. (click on to the photo to obtain a larger image)
Other members of staff can be seen in school activities and the School Buildings pages. Mr Fairbrother in particular can be seen on the The Malcolm Cup page and the Pupils page surrounded by rugby players
Below: Mr. Hall leading an Easter trip to Blankenberge probably in 1967.
