School Buildings

All but the first two photographs on this page were taken in academic year 1962/3. If you have any photographs of Copthorne School to add please email them to buttlekeswick@hotmail.com or post them to the postal address given on the Contact Page. A photograph of the front of the school in particular is yet to be found!

Possibly taken in 1966 - one of only two colour photograph I have so far obtained of the school - looks a bit grim!

This second colour photograph apparently taken in 1976 - it looks even grimmer! The gates were most likely part of the war time hostel that occupied the site.

This image was sent to me from a contact now living in New Zealand. It was taken from the house on Kelmscote Road in which he lived. Note the nissen hut - it had originally been earmarked as accomodation for the school's caretaker.

Taken on the school's first gala day, most probably in June, 1959. Photo provided by Andrew Viner who began at Copthorne in 1958.

This is the only image I have so far obtained of the hostel block - it is also shows the "terrapin" behind the two girls on the right. The girls signing their autographs are Ann Smith and Anne Milliigan on their last day at school July 1963

An image of the school hall - the pupils are the school's fifth form on their last day at school in 1963 with their form teacher Mr. Crossley.

A good view of one of the school corridors!

An interior shot of one of the wooden classrooms - the bicycle shelter can be seen through the window. The pupils are Marylin Barrett and Ann Smith

Another interior shot of a classroom - the pupil is Tony Grey

The above photographs were takan in the shcool's car park and show the dining hall in the background. The motor bike beloned to Mr. A Jeary who was the school's handicraft teacher time (circa 1958). The teacher sitting on the bike is Miss M. I. Jones who married Mr. D. Maund seen standing by the bike in the other photograph. The pupil is Freda Lombard who spent hours on one occasion waiting outside the Leofric hoping to catch sight of Bill Haley and the Comets when they appeared at the Hippodrome - only to discover they had used the back entrance!

Front os school

Since I set up this website I've long hoped a photograph of the front of the school would turn up - I fear this might never happen. Is there one in existence? I was delighted then to be at least sent a copy the architect's conception of this frontage before it was actually built. Much thanks goes to Derek Leadbeater who sent it me.
