St Marybourne

St. Marybourne 05/08/12 Max Bird

With more rain forecast, there was potential for this to be another frustrating afternoon, but the sun did stay out and it was good cricketing conditions. With usual Captain Vaughan absent Matt Newman took charge, won the toss and chose to bat.

Newman and Jeffery opened the batting but the latter fell after just three balls, caught behind off Roscoe. Matty Mould joined skipper Newman, only adding 7 before falling to the bowling of Swift. Another wicket fell cheaply, which brought Milkie Johnson to the crease, fresh from his 103 not out just two weeks ago. He and Newman added a valuable 78 for 4th wicket. Newman then fell but he had scored an important 51. Johnson’s wicket quickly fell after that, he went for 34. After those two wickets fell Coombe struggled to get going again, losing quick wickets, J.Thacker taking three wickets towards the end of the innings. Coombe Bissett finished with a total of 178 feeling that perhaps they were a few short.

If there was ever an Olympic sport for doing cricket teas this week, Mrs Smith and Mrs Bird would get the gold every time. The players enjoyed an array of different home-made cakes. The only downside was that Coombe had to then field full of this cake.

Opening bowler Mark Leckie got the home side off to the perfect start, taking the wicket of Hyland in his first over, a simple catch at mid-wicket by Nick.Bird. Fellow opening bowler Ellis then took the wicket of Bulpit, a safe catch by wicket keeper, Craig ‘safe hands’ Johnson. The away side seemed to be re building with two strong batsmen at the crease. But then Leckie trapped Stanford out lbw, a decision that the outgoing batsmen strongly disagreed with. Ellis picked up his second wicket of the match, leaving the away side struggling at 26 for 4. White 63 and Baibo 37 started to bring St. Marybourne back into the match with a gritty stand, and Coombe Bissett needed a wicket. Matt Newman was the man for the job, bowling Baibo. With White still at the crease Marybourne could still win, but he tried one shot too many and was out lbw to Newman. Neil Smith was then bought on to bowl, and he took two wickets late on in the match helping Coombe seal victory by 45 runs.
