Coombe Bissett vs U.M.S.C.C (Indian Tourists) Sunday 17th June Lost by 3 runs Max Bird

The highly anticipated international cricket match between Coombe Bissett and U.M.S.C.C was never going to be called off, even if we did have bucket loads of rain throughout the week building up to the match. Although at half past 2 there was some doubt as to whether the match would happen, with the away side nowhere to be seen. But after some redirecting they eventually arrived just before 3, better late than never.

Coombe won the toss and put the visitors in to bat. AJ opened the bowling with a solid maiden, then took the first wicket of the match, U.M.S.C.C’s opener Ajay Kumer for just 4. He and fellow opening bowler Chris Webb bowled two tidy spells, Aj taking his second wicket of the match in his 6th over. Adam Henderson then came on to remove the dangerous looking Veney Sengh to a fine catch by Bird at short square leg, for 18. That proved to be a key wicket sparking a mini collapse with another 2 wickets falling with just one run added to the total. Bhanu and Navdeeb looked to stabilise the innings getting the away side up to 50, but a streak of tactical genius from the Coombe Bissett captain changed the match; Gwilym Vaughan bringing Nick Bird on to bowl. Birdy bowled a devastating spell of 2 overs, 8 runs for 3 wickets, ripping U.M.S.C.C’s tail apart. Matty Mould supported from the other end taking two wickets on his return to the side after a 6 year absence. The visitors all out for 64 in just 19. overs

The home dressing room seemed to be quite relaxed during the tea break, possibly believing the game to be in the bag, but maybe a few too many of the delicious strawberries and cream were consumed together with a grand tea provided by John & Sue Hopkins, as the match was about to be turned on its head.

D.R. Shaw and Matty Newman walked out to face the Indian’s opening bowlers. A cautious and steady approach seemed to be the way forward but in the third over Karamjit had Shaw. Caught. Matty wasn’t far behind, Onkar taking his only wicket of the match. Newcomer from Homington, Mark Leckie walked out to the crease at number 4 with Coombe at 8 for 2. He didn’t last long, run out in the seventh over for a duck. A partnership of 9 between the bowling heroes Bird and Mould, with the latter opening his account with his trade mark pull for four, was broken when Bird was caught behind for 0. Two wickets fell in quick succession after that. Jon Burton then walked out to the middle. He was typically solid and looked like he was going to bat Coombe to victory. Until a terrible mix up between him and batting partner Chris Webb meant he was ran out. JB ran an easy single but unfortunately Chris didn’t, refusing to leave his crease, leaving a less than happy JB to march to the pavilion. Two more wickets fell, and with Coombe Bissett at 48 for 9 needing 15 to win the match was still on. Chris Webb stayed in and despite hitting 19 runs was out Hit Wicket, Coombe falling 3 runs short of the required total. This match was snatched by the visitors, who initially batted poorly, but bowled and fielded magnificently. Karamajit, Amanpeet and Singh, all returning spectacular bowling figures. (See below)
