Shrewton

Sunday 12th Aug v. Shrewton Lost by 7 wkts Max Bird

Coombe Bissett made club history in this match against Shrewton. For the first time ever there were three generations of one family playing in the team. Representing the Mould family were father and son Matt and Harry, along with Grandad Alan Fisher. The latter taking his place behind the timbers, and playing with the exuberance of a teenager, pulled off a smart stumping. Coombe playing with only ten men decided to bat first, G.E.Vaughan and A.C.Jeffery opening the batting.

Both of them made a steady start taking the home side past 50, although both batsmen did get some luck during their innings. It took the visitors 17 overs to make the breakthrough, finally getting A.J. smartly caught at gully for 28. Matty Mould stepped out at number three, adding 20 runs to the total before getting falling to another fine catch by Newbury. Chris Webb joined Vaughan at the crease, and the pair being the clubs most notorious runners, had the bookies shouting odds on the run out, they didn’t have to wait long before the pair were shaking hands at the same end, curtains for Mr Webb. Two more wickets fell quickly after that, giving debutants Harry Mould and Alan Fisher a chance to add some runs together, Granddad and grandson both scoring 5 not out. Skipper Vaughan top scored with a patient 61. Coombe finishing on 148.

At the break, while eating a lovely tea provided by Mrs Newman, Shrewton would have been the happier of the two sides.

Matty Mould opened the bowling and made the perfect start taking the wicket of Jackson. Max Bird replaced and took the wicket of Sleeman and was unlucky not to take the wicket of Mitchell, the ball millimetres away from the stumps. Bird was replaced by Jeffery who bowled five tidy overs, picking up a wicket on the way. Neil Smith, bowling from the other end, should have picked up at least one wicket, but Chris Webb missed the opportunity to catch Newbury. Shrewton in the end won the game with 15 overs to spare. J.Mitchell the pick of their batsmen hitting a stylish 65 not
