With several club members apparently suffering from nosebleed at the thought of having to travel away from their beloved Shutts Lane, it was off to Dinton for our annual encounter.
Skipper Vaughan again made the correct call, and pressganged the reluctant to open, Alan Hendersend to join him at the crease to face the first onslaught.
The pair got off to a steady start and notched 43, before the blue mist descended around the skipper, who called for yet another suicidal run, and paid the price. That’s twice in three innings. Go to the back of the class and take a hundred lines! Meanwhile, Henderson really got his head down, watched the ball carefully, and crafted his way to a fine 44, just missing out on a well- deserved half century.
Four of the next five fell quickly to the dreaded umpire’s finger, all adjudged lbw, with feet firmly stuck in the crease. The evergreen Martin Stennings did most of the damage with 3-18. It was eighteen year old Tim Rolfe, with a chirpy knock of 24 that saved some faces, but with a total of only 138 things looked ominous.
In reply, the writing appeared to be on the wall, with the talented seventeen years old Haniford, stroking the ball effortlessly to all parts of the ground, and an early visit to the bar on the cards. Alan Henderson belatedly joined the attack at second change, and made the ball swing prodigiously and soon accounted for the youngster, splendidly caught at square leg by Johnson, for a well- crafted 61 Had he not held on to it, he would have had a hole drilled through his chest! Coombe were given a glimmer of hope with wickets tumbling and overs running out, but it was not to be as Zissis hit a quick-fire 15* to seal the defeat. Henderson the pick of the bowlers 8-2-21-3 well supported by Ant Jeffery 7-1-25-3
