Today is the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day, the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I (AKA: The Great War; The War to End all Wars!)
In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.”
Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.
Congress voted to change the name to Veterans Day in June 1954 and President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued a proclamation that October acknowledging that the United States had been engaged in two wars since Armistice Day was first observed.
In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the important historical significance of the date.
