This year's car show shares the 50th Anniversary of the First Moon Walk!
As a tribute, two weeks ago we began our series concerning Apollo 11.
Last week, we discussed the actual time spent on the moon.
This week we will conclude this series with the return flight to earth.
Left on the moon was a medallion bearing the names of the three Apollo 1 astronauts who lost their lives in a launch page fire, as well as two cosmonauts who also died in accidents associated with the space program. A small silicon disk containing messages of goodwill from 73 countries as well as the names of Congressional & NASA leaders was also left behind. Also left behind was an Apollo 11 Memorial Plaque.
Astronauts Aldrin & Armstrong had spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on the Moon's surface. The Eagle fired its engine, reaching a lunar orbit, docking with Columbia on the the 27th revolution. On July 24, 44 hours after leaving lunar orbit, re-entry procedures were initiated. Due to bad weather, the landing point would be changed by 250 miles. After a flight of 36 minutes longer than planned (195 hours, 18 minutes and 35 seconds) Apollo 11 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, 13 miles from the recovery ship, USS Hornet.
