The next GENERAL MEETING of the Sunsites Gem & Mineral Club is on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 7:00 pm in the Sunsites Community Center.
The PROGRAM for the evening will be presented by Glen Minuth entitled,
“The Great Sonoran Earthquake.”
The 1887 Sororan earthquake occurred in the early afternoon of May 3 in the Teras mountain range of northwestern Mexico. It was widely felt, with some damage being recorded up to 120 miles from the epicenter in both Mexico and the United States. The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 7.6 and caused 42 casualties in the town Bavespe and 51 overall. It was the only historical earthquake to cause considerable damage in Arizona. The 1887 Tombstone Arizona newspapers mentioned lesser quakes (after shocks) on August 27, 1887 and November 11, 1887.
Glenn Minuth is a Department of Army civilian employed as division chief/technical integrator (project manager) for the Network Enterprise Technology Command at Fort Huachuca. His Bachelor’s and graduate degrees are in geography with specialties in cartography, geomorphology, remote sensing, and geology.
Other areas of academic focus were biogeography (flora/fauna), weather/climate, and soils. Minuths research focused in the area of geomorphology and geology examining mound micro-relief (Mima-type mounds) on volcanic mudflows in the central Sierra Nevada foothills of California. Glenn taught geography and geology in the Life and Physical Science Department of American River College, Sacramento, California, for seven years. He was an instructor in geography and geology for 10 years at Cochise College in both credit and non-credit programs.

FIELD TRIP, SAT. APRIL 26
We will meet at “The Jail” parking area across from the Old Pearce Mercantile in Pearce – 8:30 a.m., leaving for Courtland @ 8:45 a.m. to hunt for turquoise, azurite & malachite in the Courtland area. Bring your usual equipment and don’t forget the sunscreen. There are quite a few places of interest around there that have good prospecting attributes. We need a back up leader & anyone who has been there before will be appreciated to assist.
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
The last field trip (March 15) was to the Chiricahua Nat’l Monument, The participants were: Tony Crumly, Zoe and Carl Schnabel, Walter and Hanni Sigel and me. We saw faults, columner jointing, fiamme fumeroles, tuff, welded tuff, dacite and lots of scenery. The weather couldn't have been better. The photo’s on the next page were taken by all. See more on our Picassa website.
We need a volunteer (s) for the Field Trip Committee. It appears that Henri is not in the area because of his job.
We also need help with lining up Speakers for our meetings. Any suggestions? Does anyone know of available people? Let me know.
I haven't accomplished anything new on the shed.
Jack
