The paintings of James Clark (1812-1884) are often confused with those of his son James Albert Clark (1863-1955), particularly since they often worked as a team, signing paintings James Clark and Son. See the Signature Examples page for comparison. James Clark's signature leans slightly forward to the right, while James Albert Clark's signature leans slightly back to the left. Any painting signed J L Clark or dated before about 1875 would be the work of James Clark senior.
