Frederick Albert Clark was the eldest son of Albert Clark and his first wife Ellen (nee Parsons). He was born at 4 St Paul Street, Islington on 29 March 1869. His occupation is given as "artist" on his parish marriage record of 26 June 1890 when he married Helena Louisa Webb at St. Mary's church, Islington. At first they lived in Hornsey, but by 1901 they had moved to Avenell Road in Islington. By the time of the 1911 census the couple had three sons and three daughters, and had moved again to Umfreville Road in Haringey, where Frederick remained until 1914. On all the census records he describes himself as "painter of animals". However, he was also dealing in antique furniture, a fact revealed on the marriage certificates of some of his children. He may have worked with his uncle James Albert Clark who lived nearby and was also an antiques dealer at this time.
"Ormonde"
A report in the local newspaper in 1910 records that Frederick had to take a client to court to recover the final payment for several paintings completed to commission. The judge ruled in his favour and Frederick received his payment plus costs.
In July 1914 Frederick appeared in court again, this time charged with unlawfully removing his furniture from the house he rented. He was due to vacate his home in Umfreville Road in September and had stopped paying rent, so the furniture would have been seized to pay the debt. He was ordered to pay £70, twice the value of the furniture disposed of, to the landlord.
Two months after Frederick's second court appearance, his wife Helena passed away. The family moved to 29 Queen's Road, Finsbury Park. In 1924, at the age of 55, he married Eliza Osborne Johns, a widow.
Like his father, Frederick Albert Clark specialised in portraits of horses, although there are also auction records of cattle and dogs. He sometimes signed his name in full, or as F. A. Clark or F. Albert Clark. A trade label he placed on the back of his paintings reads "F. Albert Clark, animal painter", perhaps in acknowledgement of his well-known father. The only official records where his full name appears is on his children's marriage records and some electoral rolls. Only the name "Albert" is given on his birth certificate, the name "Frederick" was presumably added later to avoid confusion with his father at home. He is named as "Albert" on all his census records, he married twice as "Albert Clark", and on his death certificate he is simply "Albert Clark, an artist painter (retired)".
Frederick Albert Clark passed away at Hillingdon Hospital, Uxbridge, on 29 July 1954, aged 85.
