Rae is a single Mom raising her amazing autistic teen, his emotional support dog Daisy, and two cats Endora & Sunshine who fill their lives with joy and mayhem. She learned to crochet from her Grandmother when she was 9 during a summer visit. (RIP Grama Joanne 1931-12/2020) Her first crochet project was a baby blanket when she was 10. It was a yellow single crochet nearly rectangular blanket with a half double crochet border for her first baby cousin. She has picked up her crochet hook from time to time over the years to make a gift for someone or just see if she can make that plant hanger or sweater for Kai’s teddy bears. Turns out she could, thanks to Grandma.
Kai is a 14 year old aspiring scarf model (just kidding) who loves to draw, bake, and play mine craft. He does not mind the Pandemic quarantine one bit, or miss being in school in person. He has a knack for making things and creating. At 13, the year he learned he was on the spectrum, he decided to build an herb box to plant herbs in for the patio. A trip to Grandma’s house for supplies, a YouTube video, three fence boards and some screws and he made an 18x24x36 garden box to plant his herbs in with Lavender, Rosemary, and Thyme. His potted garden grew to other pots as his aspirations for Chamomile, Basil, Sage and Peppermint were too large for the planter. His motto is “why choose if you can have both” He dreams of becoming a Lego designer, an engineer or working with animals in some capacity.
Someday they dream of having a small sheep herd for wool, and selling the dyed yarn and crochet things by the road. Growing herbs and being close to nature and the critters seems a good life.
But in Nov. 2020, having been given notice by the landlord, after 7 years in good standing, that rent was being hijacked up 20% or rather another $150 a month, in the middle of a global pandemic and winter holidays. Rae decided to ask friends if they wanted any crochet gifts made for giving this year. They responded with orders, encouragement to keep going, and even helped post her work here for you to review.
Moving is expensive and just like things happen in threes, her car broke down on the highway Dec 21st, only to be vandalized beyond repair before the tow truck arrived. She is now without a car, needing to move, and unemployed like so many out there right now. Your purchase will go toward supporting efforts to help Rae & Kai get back on their feet. We hope you love Rae’s work as much as she loves making it.
