1. Name of the course in which the assignment will be used.
MINF 3650 – Information Systems
2. Name of your department:
Hull College of Business
3. Name of assignment:
Mind Map with Visio
** Instructions **
A. Read the article (4 pages), "Exploring User Requirements through Mind Mapping," attached in this assignment folder.
---> This article describes how you can use a Mind Mapping technique to explore and identify user requirements in IS development. Identifying and defining user requirements are a critical step in Systems Development Life Cycle, which is discussed in Chapter 12 in the textbook.
---> You have to use a Desktop version of MS Visio, not an online version, for this assignment.
B. Watch/Learn the video tutorials for Visio - Mind Map (Brainstorm diagram) [posted in 'Content Browser' > 'Tech_ASG_Resource' > 'Visio_Mind_Map' folder]
C. Complete (= Replicate with Visio) the Mind Map diagram of "Figure 8 - Mind Map of User Interaction (User Wish Mind Map)" on page 4 in the "Exploring User Requirements through Mind Mapping" article. (Your work may look like this! [Example posted here])
D. You need to find and include similar symbols/icons used in Figure 8
E. Don't forget to include your name in two locations - one in 'City Library Interview (by Your Name)' and the other in the bottom right along with the date of your work
F. Save and Submit your Visio file in the dropbox (.vsdx)
G. Export (or save as) your Visio file to a PDF document (.pdf) and Submit the pdf file in the dropbox.
** Purpose of assignment (goals, objectives, competencies) **
The purpose of this assignment is to learn how to use a drawing/diagramming tool (Visio) for mind mapping (aka, brainstorming). The mind mapping (or brainstorming) technique is used to organize the information. More specifically for the information technology and systems (IT/IS) development, it is used to identify and define user requirements in the IT/IS projects. (Please read the article of ‘Exploring User Requirements through Mind Mapping’ posted in the instruction to understand how the mind mapping technique is used in the IT/IS development practice.) By completing this assignment, you will understand how the mind mapping (or brainstorming) software tool can be used for a real world IT/IS project and be able to apply your diagramming skill with Visio to the IT/IS development practices.
** Instructions **
A. Read the article (4 pages), "Exploring User Requirements through Mind Mapping," attached in this assignment folder.
---> This article describes how you can use a Mind Mapping technique to explore and identify user requirements in the Library systems development. Identifying and defining user requirements are a critical step in Systems Development Life Cycle, which is discussed in Chapter 12 in the textbook.
---> It can also be used for the IT system design (Examples include Figure 2.5. and 2.6 in the textbook), where managers and IT architects work together to translate business goals into business requirements, and ultimately into more detailed systems requirements. They can use this mind mapping technique in developing/defining/refining those requirements in each translation.
---> We can also use this mind mapping technique to brainstorm ideas. For example, you can use this technique to develop your idea of how to develop a research project.
---> Mind Map is also known as 'Brainstorming Diagram' in MS Visio.
---> You have to use a Desktop version of MS Visio, not an online version, for this assignment.
