Cycle Security Marking Session
Unfortunately thefts of cycles continue to be reported in this area, but with some simple actions these thefts can be greatly reduced.
All cycles, when unattended, must be locked up securely with good quality locks and when kept in sheds and garages they must be subjected to secondary security such as a heavy duty chain bolted to the frame of the building or into a ground anchor.
Security marking of bikes is a an excellent crime prevention method together with entering them on the National Cycle Data Base which allows for stolen bikes when recovered, to be returned direct to their owners. The most recent successful recovery was of a bike marked on 13th April 2021 which was stolen when left unattended and insecure outside the owners house on 27th April 2021. The bike was recovered on 9th Feb 2022 and identified through the security marking and returned to the owner on 10th Feb. 2022. A very successful return and a very grateful owner.
The next Neighbourhood Watch security marking session will take place in conjunction with Up Hatherley Parish Council on Saturday 5th March from 9.30am – 1.30pm at Up Hatherley Village Hall, Cold Pool Lane, Up Hatherley Cheltenham Glos. GL51 6JA
Each cycle marked will also be registered on the National Cycle Database so that as above, all recovered cycles can be returned to their owners.
The security marking and registration on the National Cycle Data Base are both FREE OF CHARGE
Good quality cycle D locks and alarm padlocks will be available to purchase on the day
This is an excellent crime prevention imitative, everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you there.

ATM – Cash Machine Distractions
In the last few days in both Gloucester and Cheltenham Police have received reports of offenders attempting to distract people withdrawing money from ATM Cash Machines.
This could be an attempt to see the PIN number that is used and then to steal the card by distracting the person using the machine when the card is returned.
On several occasions offender advised the user that the machine was causing problems and a specific key had to be held down whilst putting in the PIN number, it was subsequently established that money had been withdrawn on the account and not by the user.
Always be aware of who is around you when withdrawing cash from a machine. Make sure that no one else can see you when you are putting in your PIN number by standing too close behind you or off to one side.
Do not let anyone standing nearby influence you on how you use the machine, or try to speak to you and distract you when using the machine. Do not forget to take the cash as well as your card as both will be returned into the machine if left too long.
If you believe that someone else has managed to obtain your PIN number or the machine does not return your card, inform your bank immediately and have your card cancelled.
If you suspect that something has been added to the cash machine please contact the Police on 101 and report the problem.
Please pass this warning onto your members.
